Observe, first of all, how instructive Yahweh’s protection is. It is instructive for us, the readers. As we work our way through chapter 19 we observe God protecting David by means of Jonathan (vv. 1–7) and Michal (vv. 11–17). When, therefore, we read that David “came to Samuel at Ramah” (v. 18), we expect that now, in some way, Samuel will be a means of deliverance for David. The text surprises us. Samuel can do nothing; rather, it is the sheer power of Yahweh’s Spirit that keeps David in safety.
